Back during the lockdown, Maven came up with a fun idea to match miles posted to Strava with donations to charity, it was a fun idea to help get us all out and exercising. I had been cycling a lot immediately prior to the challenge being set, so felt quietly confident that I could be in with a shot of topping the table for most miles done. I got on my bike that first week, and rode pretty much every day, culminating with 200km on the final day. I finished the week exhausted, but with about 500 km ridden, happy with my efforts. After uploading my activities to strava and I went to check the league table.. 2nd.. to Ed. He’d done some crazy rides and had basically covered more than double the distance I had. Hoping to save face, I clicked into his activities wanting to check the pace, surely I had beaten him there. It was a marginal victory for me, however my face dropped when I realised he had done his rides solo, not freewheeling in the draft like I had. He was an incredible athlete, and an accomplished cyclist alongside his running feats. I’ll remember him most though, for the energy he brought to the workplace, his positivity and friendliness. He will be sorely missed.
