In our first year at Jesus College, I was Ed's roommate. He was always cheerful and generous. I didn't have a computer back then so he let me use his. I'm sure I had some annoying habits but I don't remember ever having an argument with him about it. If he disagreed with something he did it in the most discreet, pleasant -- should I say British? - way. I once went for a run with him. He didn't frown for having to slow down to my pace, just smilingly said he was just warming up with me, or something to that effect. He was always very rational, so I hope Ed would forgive me for hoping there are now other, even more spectactular fields, where he continues to run. Rest in peace, Ed.
