Michael (Chicago Area Orienteering Club) 7th February 2024

Hi Ginny, Our hearts and thoughts will be in London tomorrow with your family. I wanted to share a couple more photos and some stories. I handle the registration for our orienteering events and last year I was excited to see a registrant whose name I did not recognize and his club was listed as SLOW which I did not recognize. I was excited to see he was from London. My family came to the US from across the UK: Glamorgan (not surprisingly, the Rees family came to toil in the coal mines), Lincolnshire and Perthshire (my middle name is McGregor). Part of my pleasure in orienteering is its global nature. Our community here in Chicago has immigrants from Sweden, Czech Republic, Romania, Belarus, Ukraine and Bulgaria to name a few but we haven't had too many from the UK. Ed showed up at that first meet and showed his mettle by nipping our best and brightest young orienteer by 7 seconds. That young man's name is Jan Erik Naess. Jan Erik's family is transplanted from Canada and he ran for the Canadian National Orienteering team in recent years. Ed found his community here in Chicago with our club, the West Loop Run Club and hanging out with Jan Erik and his friends. Ed also attended the Flying Pig Orienteering meet with Jan Erik and his father, Oivind. This is one of the main events that our club likes to travel to each year. It's hosted by the Cincinnati club. The first day was a sprint course on the campus of Morehead State University in Morehead, Kentucky. Ed ran the Red course (his age group) and easily took first place. I guess he wanted a little tougher challenge so he moved to the Blue level (21-34 age group) for both the middle and long courses. Those events were held at Carter Caves State Park in eastern Kentucky and Ed held his own in some challenging terrain. Kindest regards, Michael
